About Mira
Mira Nakashima, daughter of George Nakashima, received an undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1963, a Master's in architecture from Waseda University in Tokyo in 1966, and worked as her father's assistant from 1970 to 1990. Since then, as well as lumber processing and selection, Mira has been responsible for design and woodworking supervision, while brother Kevin helps manage the finances. Mira keeps an extremely busy schedule throughout the year, continuing her father's design legacy throughout the world. She has set up shows and exhibits in Japan and the United States to honor George Nakashima's work. In 1995, she designed and constructed the Second Peace Altar for Russia, and the following year the Third Peace Altar for Auroville, India. Mira is working on a documentary film about her father with John Terry Nakashima, and hopes that another Peace Altar for Africa will find a home at the Desmond Tutu Peace Center in Capetown.
